Described by the San Francisco Chronicle as “some kind of musical Thomas Edison — you can just hear her tinkering around in her workshop, putting together new sounds and textural ideas,” Katherine Balch writes music that seeks to create intimate sonic environments driven by attention to detail, textural lyricism, and playful investigation of sound. Her music has been commissioned and performed by symphony orchestras and leading ensembles from coast to coast and internationally. Katherine is managed by Young Concert Artists, Inc., where she was the 2017-2019 Composer-in-Residence. She completed her M.M. at Yale School of Music and is currently a doctoral candidate at Columbia University, where her mentors include Georg Friedrich Haas, George Lewis, Fred Lerdahl, and Marcos Balter. She also on faculty at Mannes School of Music. Her chamber music is published by Schott PSNY.
Katherine Balch is the 9th Young American Composer in Residence for California Symphony. Over her three years with us she has added 3 new works to the canon. Two of these have been premiered so far and we are proud to promote Katherine as “a superbly gifted composer… a compositional voice that is truly unique and full of wonder” (Mercury News).
