Cool vibrations abound in the second of four FREE virtual concerts hosted by Music Director Donato Cabrera, featuring lively selections by Robyn Bollinger and a quintet of musicians from the California Symphony’s all-star wind section. Join 30 minutes ahead of the concert to hear Maestro Cabrera in conversation with the featured artists.
• Bach, Balch, and Bartók: virtuoso Robyn Bollinger, who was the soloist at the 2019 premiere of former Composer-in-Residence Katherine Balch’s Artifacts violin concerto, performs selections spanning three centuries.
• Full of Hungarian folk harmonies, Bartók’s fiendishly difficult violin sonata features sections where the soloist plays several notes simultaneously; plucking and bowing at the same time, and a fast section originally written in quarter-tones—that’s more than the standard 12 notes in Western classical music.
• An all-star California Symphony Wind Quintet—Laura Reynolds (oboe), Michelle Caimotto (flute), Stephen Zielinski (clarinet), Carla Wilson (bassoon) and Meredith Brown (French horn)—performs Afro-Caribbean and jazz infused pieces from Aires Tropicales by Cuban-born American composer Paquito D’Rivera.
This concert is made possible by California Symphony donors, with additional support from a CARES Act grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).
