Rossmoor California Symphony Society Meeting

An evening with the California Symphony's Composer-in-Residence

Katherine Balch

Hillside Clubhouse at Rossmoor—Diablo Room

The Young American Composer-in-Residence program, the California Symphony’s well-regarded and highly competitive program for young composers, has produced 6 Rome Prize Winners including Mason Bates—one of the most-performed living composers, whose “(R)evolution of Steve Jobs” opera was just nominated for 3 Grammy awards.

Katherine Balch is the 9th Young American Composer-in-Residence and first female to hold the position. She joins to talk to the group about her experiences so far, her vision for the violin concerto she is composing for our May finale concert, and what it’s like to be a young composer, trying to reach a classical music audience that traditionally favors the “old, dead, white guys” (Beethoven, Mozart etc). The presentation will conclude with a Q&A, moderated by Operations and Education Director Sunshine Deffner, with Katie and the audience.

The event will begin with wine and light snacks.

Open to Rossmoor California Symphony Society members.  Members are Rossmoor residents and a limited number of non-residents are allowed to join. For details, please call RCSS Vice President Jimmy Gahl at 925.954.1473.
