Romance and Reunion
Opening this enticing program is Beehoven's Leonore Overture No. 3. Originally written as an overture to his Opera Fidelio, of which there were a few revisions, the Leonore Overture No. 3 has become a standard in orchestral repertoire. Full of drama and jubilation, this will surely be a phenominal overture to the evening.
It has been said that American composer, Leroy Anderson, is one of the top 5 American composers. In celebrating the centennial of his birth, compositions Forgotten Dreams and Serenata will be delightful in this evening's program.
Next, the California Symphony and Joyce Yang will reunite once again on stage - Our long-time subscribers may remember the incredible performance with Joyce Yang when she was merely 13 years old in November of 1999. Since then she has done remakable things including taking the Silver medal as the yougest participant of the 2005 Van Cliburn Competition. Don't miss this opportunity to hear the Rachmaninoff 2nd Piano Concerto!
Completing this program is Kodály's Háry János Suite, which according to Kodály is "the personification of the Hungarian story-telling imagination." Taken from his opera of the same name, the story is based and woven around the military exploits of Janos, who actually lived in Hungary early in the nineteenth century. When at the concert, be sure to look for the cimbalom, an interesting instrument much like a hammered dulcimer, often found in Hungarian folk music.
