Program One Made in America
SUN. OCT. 12, 2008 AT 4:00PM
TUES, OCT. 14, 2008 7:30PM

Made in America features works both composed and premiered in the U.S. The concert opens with Samuel Barber's most famous composition, Adagio for Strings (premiered in New York in November of 1938). Though breath-taking by itself, the symphony has gone above and beyond by featuring world-renowned handstand acrobats Iouri Safranov and Nikolai Melnikov creating an audio-visual experience never witnessed before!

Also performing on this program is 1997 Van Cliburn Gold Medalist, Jon Nakamatsu, performing the very piece that won him the gold - Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 (premiering in New York in November of 1909)! Often referred to as the "Rach 3," this piece has the reputation of being one of the most difficult concertos in the standard piano repertoire.
Closing the program is Dvorák's infamous Symphony No. 9 are perhaps better known as The New World Symphony. This piece was composed during Dvořák's visit to the U.S. between 1892 and 1895 and is one of the most popular pieces in the symphonic repertoire today!
The California Symphony would like to thank Michael Stead Porsche for sponsoring the October concerts.
