Program Four - Symphony in 3-D
SUN. MAY 3, 2009 AT 4:00PM
TUES, MAY 5, 2009 7:30PM

The season’s grand finale “Symphony in 3-D” is going to be a sensory experience for all, beginning with Aaron Copland’s sublime Appalachian Spring (for which he received the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1945) which sets the tone for this unforgettable experience.
Very young and prodigiously gifted pianist Conrad Tao returns to our stage performing Ravel’s stunning Piano Concerto in G. (You may remember Conrad’s last appearance during the CSO’s 20th anniversary as part of an unforgettable piano duo.) In 1929 Ravel was excited that his piano concerto would be his showcase for both his remarkable virtuosity and his compositional talents. Some of the material came from abandoned works of a decade before, while other parts were strongly influenced by the jazz craze that was then sweeping the world. Though he did not get the chance to perform the work himself, he did conduct the premiere in 1932.

The performance ends in an extraordinary way with Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. 2009 is the International Year of Astronomy, celebrating the 400th anniversary of Galileo's scientific discoveries. It is with great excitement that the California Symphony will celebrate this moment in history with a grand concert as the orchestra is accompanied with a new 3-D film, "Astronomical Pictures at an Exhibition," by astronomer and visual artist Dr. José Francisco Salgado.
Dr. Salgado is meticulously choreographing images and animations from NASA, ESA, and the Adler Planetarium Library and fleshing the program out with his own professional photography all the while enhancing parts of the program with special imagery. The World Premiere is not one to be missed!
This concert is sponsored by KPMG with additional support from the Diablo Regional Arts Assosication.
