Grammy Award-winning entertainer Steve Tyrell to perform with the California Symphony at 11th Annual Target Pops on the Plaza
Steve Tyrell - the Grammy-winning voice behind some of the most popular movie tunes of the last decade - will perform with the California Symphony at the 11th annual "Target Pops on the Plaza" free community concert in Concord on September 11, 2010.
Widely credited with making classic pop standards popular again, Tyrell has been called "...one of the most exquisite voices on the national nightclub circuit" by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
Besides recording songs for films like the "Something's Gotta Give," starring Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson, and "Did You Hear about the Morgans?," with Hugh grant and Sarah Jessica Parker, Tyrell tours the country. Along the way, he's appeared with The Boston Pops and the New York Pops, and performed on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" and "The Today Show."
Setting the stage for his first appearance in Contra Costa County, "Target Pops on the Plaza"' will pair Tyrell with California Symphony Music Director Barry Jekowsky, who early in his career played percussion for one of the original crooners - Tony Bennett.
This year's "Target Pops on the Plaza" will also feature ABC7 news anchor Dan Ashley as master of ceremonies and Target's lovable mascot Bullseye in another fun-filled two hours of Broadway, film, classical and operatic favorites; patriotic standards and cartoon classics. The concert will also honor Bette Budde, Concord resident and local WWII W.A.S.P. and commemorate the 9th anniversary of the tragedy of 9/11, and honor the brave men and women who have given their lives to preserve our freedom.
Target Pops on the Plaza is being hosted by the City of Concord, home of the world-renowned Concord Records, Jazz Festival, Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps. Sponsors of this year's event include the City of Concord, Target, Thomas J. Long Foundation, Contra Costa Times, Chevron, Tesoro, Concord Disposal, Pacific Farmers Market, Sonoma Bank and Todos Santos Business Association.
So pack up the family and head to downtown Concord at Todos Santos Plaza (Willow Pass and Grant) on Saturday, September 11. The fun begins at 6:30 pm.
